Hydropower in Europe has a rich history, driving industrial growth and welfare in the past century. Today, it contributes around 650 TWh annually, roughly 65% of the region’s potential. Despite stable production in recent years, fluctuations occur due to hydrological variations. Figure 2 illustrates hydropower utilization and untapped potential across European countries, revealing significant room for development. Many nations, including those highlighted, have yet to exploit even half of their feasible potential, contingent upon market demands.
